Gillis family papers, 1859-1865 [microform].

The collection consists of a microfilm copy of letters relating to the Gillis family of Jamestown, Georgia from 1859-1865. Most letters are from the four Gillis brothers to each other or to their father and sister. One letter is written by another Confederate soldier (W.J.M. Graham). Their experiences in the Confederate Army are described including opinions of persons in command, African American Union troops, and hardships endured.

The Gillis family was apparently from Jamestown, Georgia. Four Gillis brothers served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The unit rank of W.S. Gillis in unknown, though he apparently had attended (1859) Emory and Henry College, in Virginia. His three brothers were lieutenants; M.
